Indigenous Australia - Aboriginal Art & Culture
Australian Aboriginal art is the oldest living art tradition in the world. Aborigines- Indigenous Australians- have been producing visual art for thousands of years. Modern Aboriginal artists continue the tradition using modern materials in their artworks. There is no one Aboriginal society and people in different regions tend to highlight their own identity and characteristics in their art forms. Art is one of the key rituals of Aboriginal culture and much of Aboriginal art relates to stories of the Dreamtime- the Creation Period in Aboriginal belief.
Aboriginal art is the most internationally recognizable form of Australian art, with a wide variety of styles. It can be made up of a series of dots lines or just the outline of a shape. Three common types are X-ray art, dot-painting and stencil art which are used in a wide variety of media including, painting, rock art, wood carving and fiber crafts.
